Above All, I Want to Escape is a series of 6 collaborative mix-media works that come from the imagination of illustrator Lili Szabo and myself. It is centered around emotions of nostalgia, feeling adrift on the edge of adulthood, and an inexplicable need to fade into a forgotten dream.

I want to be the only person in the world for a little bit,

To be one with the trees, the grass,

The bugs and bees and flowers and animals,

I want to be gone, and I want to run around the forest naked,

To feel the innocence and playful curiosity I once did as a child,

Before time passed and everything became real,

I long to be barefoot in a field,

To feel the energy of the earth flowing through me,

To feel the dampness of dew on green,

The slight stinging of the grass and flowers,

I want to be in the silence of the wild,

To hear nothing but the wind rustling trees,

Above all, I want to escape, and I don’t want to be real.
